Open Chat / What can you hear?
« on: February 01, 2007, 02:45:50 AM »
I don't know if you guys have heard about those ultrasonic ringtones that only teens can hear but here is a neat test to see how high your hearing range goes.  Listen to the tones and see which one is the highest you can actually hear... and you gotta be able to actually hear the tone and not just the click from your speakers at the start and end of the clip.

The last one I could hear was the 14.1khz... pretty bad I'm guessing.

Post what you level get up to.

And here is a high quality wav file that contains a ring tone... I can't hear a damm thing from this.  Can you?

Open Chat / Woman gets stuck in cave and traps tour group

Notice how they don't say where she was from... my bets are on good ol' U S of A

Stuck woman traps SA cave group

An overweight woman who got stuck in a South African cave trapped 22 fellow tourists for more than 10 hours and had to be prised free with liquid paraffin.

The woman became trapped in the Tunnel of Love obstacle in the Cango Caves in Western Cape on New Year's Day.

The caves' manager said the woman had been warned she might not be suitable but she insisted on trying.

One of those trapped was a diabetic who had to be brought insulin. The woman and the other tourists were unhurt.

The rescue operation involved several ambulance teams and a helicopter.

Hein Gerstner, manager of Cango Caves, told the BBC it was an "expensive exercise" that could cost 40,000 rand ($5,700).

"We don't know yet who will foot the bill," he said.

The ordeal began when the woman became stuck just after noon on New Year's Day.

Mr Gerstner said the woman was "told at the ticket office that she was too big to take part in the specific section".

He said she was again warned by the guide but that it was "very difficult to discriminate".

Mr Gerstner said: "The obstacle has a narrow base. She lost her footing and went down in a splits position. There was no way she could get her body weight up."

But he said she was young and remained mentally strong throughout and the other tourists took the ordeal "exceptionally well".

The tourists, including two asthmatic children, were given blankets, water and chocolate bars as the rescue proceeded.

One rescuer was able to climb over the woman to deliver insulin to the diabetic.

No drilling equipment was needed and the woman was eventually freed with a pulley and paraffin used to grease the surface at about 2320.

She was taken to hospital but is not injured and is expected to be released on Tuesday.

Mr Gerstner said: "We believe what goes in, must come out again. People get stuck all the time - that's one of the unfortunate things that happen, it's part of the adventure."

However, he said the caves would consider more stringent measures for those entering.

I never knew what I was missing!!!  My last chair was pretty standard issue... but to my surprise today when I got to my desk I had a brand spankin new Steelcase Think chair (1st pic with white back).  It is so much more comfortable than my last one.

On the topic of chairs… I’ve always wanted a Herman Miller Aeron… they look sweet (2nd pic)

Open Chat / Happy Festivus Everyone!
« on: December 22, 2006, 05:29:41 PM »
We all know that special time of year is upon us... no it’s not Christmas... it’s Festivus tomorrow!

As most of you know Festivus is a joyous celebration.  Of course I will be putting up my Festivus pole (pure aluminium) tomorrow to protest against holiday materialism with this very utilitarian object… no decoration required!  Aluminium has a very high strength to weight ratio you know.

I would be happy if some of you would join me tomorrow for the Festivus dinner… of which one of the most enjoyable activities is the “airing of grievances”, where we can tell one another all of the way that we have disappointed each other over the last year.

Finally there will be the feats of strength, where one lucky individual will have to wrestle and pin the head of household to the ground before Festivus can end.

Since we may not all be able to join together for this occasion I suggest we take this time to observe the airing of grievances.  I’ll go first and then you can follow.

Bob: I am disappointed in you let this site go down for those couple days in October.  Living in Edmonton is crappy enough and this site is my lifeline to the world.  I thought you were the Uber Webmaster but I guess I was wrong.

Mike: I am disappointed in you that you still do not have a girlfriend and that you are not getting any ass.  I would think that since you go to Mount Royal with lots of 19 year olds you would be the mack daddy.  I guess my hopes and dreams for you were in vain.

Steve:  I am disappointed in you for getting a good job and cleaning up your act.  I really thought you would be our Cole replacement… you make me very very sad.

Cole:  I hate you because you are in Mexico where it is nice and warm and I am here in the frozen north.

Neal:  My heart is broken that you didn’t come visit me up here in Edmonton… I cry in my pillow every night because of you.  And you gave me frostbite on my hands by locking us out of the condo!

Tom:  I am disappointed in you for much the same reason as Cole.  You let me down by moving to a nice warm BC city and left the rest of us in the frigid prairies.

Drew:  You live in the Maritimes… I don’t need to be disappointed in you… you should be disappointed in yourself.

Jaron:  You have a sweet new apartment and I am disappointed in you for being so damm sexy.

Karol:  You have let me and everyone else down on this site by not being more upset about not being in the 500+ club.  We enjoy your agony and you simply aren’t providing us with enough fodder.

All The Rest of You:  You disappoint me in so many ways… I will elaborate more later.

Open Chat / Top Search Terms 2006
« on: December 20, 2006, 03:55:01 PM »
How interesting is this! Look at how different the top ten search terms of 2006 were for Google, Yahoo and AOL.

Here's Google:

1. Bebo
2. Myspace
3. World Cup
4. Metacafe
5. Radioblog
6. Wikipedia
7. Video
8. Rebelde
9. Mininova
10. Wiki

Here's Yahoo:

1. Britney Spears
2. WWE
3. Shakira
4. Jessica Simpson
5. Paris Hilton
6. American Idol
7. Beyonce Knowles
8. Chris Brown
9. Pamela Anderson
10. Lindsay Lohan

Here's AOL:

1. Weather
2. Dictionary
3. Dogs
4. American Idol
5. Maps
6. Cars
7. Games
8. Tattoo
9. Horoscopes
10. Lyrics

I'm shocked that there is only one repeat/// "American Idol" appears on both Yahoo and AOL. That's it. I would have thought that, given the sheer number of searches done through each engine, there'd be a lot more similarity in the results. I guess it means that very different types of people use each of the three engines.

Looking back over the results, I think I can suggest the following market segmentation: Google users are a little more educated and keep up the latest and greatest trends but are a little geeky, Yahoo users are horny uneducated rednecks, and AOL users are old geezers.

The only result that stumps me is "tattoo" on AOL... that doesn't seem very old-person-ish.

Do you think my assessment is right?

Anyone else play World of Warcraft?  I tried that 10 day free trial and am now kinda hooked... signed up for the full package a few days ago.  Yes... I am a huge nerd.

So far I only have one character, a level 15 Undead Warrior.  I'm on the Khaz Modan server.

Who wants to play?

Open Chat / Becoming a Junkie?
« on: December 01, 2006, 05:17:57 PM »
Is anyone else becoming a energy drink junkie?  I've stopped drinking as much coffee but have picked up a habit of consuming energy drinks.  I find that if I pack myself full of caffene, taurine, guarana, and ginkgo, that I can work like a maniac and not have to stop for breaks.  I find these work better than coffee because you don't crash so bad after the high is gone; all the herbs must play some part in that.

Seriously, the only thing that compares to the concentration I get from drinking these is the Ritalin I used to take while studying.  I'd still be using that if I had a hookup here in Edmonton... that shit was amazing! You could study for 7 hours strait and not once get distracted.

So who else drinks these things?  Right now my favorites are the Lost Energy Drink and The Rock Star one.  Back when I used to work at Ceilis I used to drink 3 - 4 Red Bulls a night... and then a couple more at school the next day to stay alert.  At least I'm not that hooked anymore!

Here's a cool site that reviews energy drinks http://www.screamingenergy.com/

Open Chat / Coldest Place Ever
« on: November 30, 2006, 03:52:22 PM »
Vostok, Antarctica is the home of the coldest temperature on Earth at a cool -89 °C. At the Russian research station the temperature is regularly in the -30 to the -60 °C mark. This chilly weather is due to the exceptionally high speed of the arctic winds. The katabatic or downward type winds that bring the brisk temperature, travel with speeds up to 200 km/h from inland toward the coast of the continent. As one moves toward the higher region inland -- that is, toward the true pole -- the temperature drops from its normal -40 °C to -80 °C.

The coldest temperatures usually occur during the winter months of around March 22. That is when Antarctica has completed days of darkness. Warmer temperatures, usually still well below freezing, occur during the all day summer months around September 22.

Antarctica also holds the previous record of the lowest temperature on Earth at -88 C. Although still unofficial, Vostok Station may have broken its own record for the coldest temperature on Earth. It has been reported that Vostok reached the temperature of -91 °C during the winter of 1997.  This is cold enough that carbon dioxide actually freezes!

Wow... now imagine how cold that would be with wind chill factored in!!!  -30 doesn't seem so cold anymore.

« on: November 24, 2006, 03:04:28 AM »
Pretty sweet, here's some pics of the V10 Turbo Diesel Touareg towing a 190 tonne 747.  The only modifications were a stonger tow hitch and adding ballast.  It did 7 passes of the runway, got up to nearly 15 km/h, and was able to stop using the standard brakes.
