Open Chat / The Dark Knight
« on: July 20, 2008, 05:37:15 PM »
I was fortunate enough to see the new Batman film opening weekend.  While the lines were out the door to buy in line, Diane went online - suckers.
With so much hype there is always the fear of anything having to live up to it, but unlike Star Wars episode I, and its impossible hype, The Dark Knight actually met, dare exceeded the hype for me.  This film could probably run midnight and 2am shows on weekends for the next 3 months.

There is no doubt that we are living in a Golden age of comic book movies.  Idol worship of the tales of these fictitious characters has never been better.  We somehow lived through the high production, high box office revenue crap that was Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin. (Horrible movies that seemed to play off of the Adam West version style - It might as well have said "KAPOWIE" AND "ZOIK" everytime Val Kilmer, or George Clooney hit someone - because it was that bad.

If you need a reminder of how bad, check the link on Mr. Freeze here:  http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1649694

We are I'm hoping this set the bar for the super-hero genre - no more millions of dollars to make pieces of shit like Daredevil, Elektra, The Fantastic 4 1&2, the 1st Hulk, Ghostrider, Spider-man 2, Spider-man 3, dare I say Spider-man 1.  I'm really hoping this round of DC films does not go the way Marvel did - and they are both improving.

Iron Man was awesome, I'm a huge Robert Downey Jr. fan, and Tony Stark is a rich ass billionaire, starts SHIELD, etc.  Great take on the stories built by Marvel, and a really good film.  I've heard the new Hulk is good too, a relief from the last one.

For the Batman flicks, it seems that they cast a girl that is popular at the time (so they think), but the actresses are so bad, they never seem to work again - Katie Holmes, Alicia Silverstone and Uma Thurman to name a few.

FINALLY: The Dark Knight - I'm getting to it, the line was ridiculous, down the hall for one side of the theatre, out the side door and down the ramp to the back parking lot of Chinook.  The trailers - movie life just gets better, The Watchmen got me intrigued, its based off of a DC comics graphic novel, and looks pretty intense. www.watchmenmovie.com for deets.  I can't wait to see Robert Downey jr. again in the upcoming Tropic Thunder comedy with Ben Stiller and Jack Black.

THE FILM:
Every seen with the Joker I was on the edge of my seat, believe the hype, always creepy, just building this character that you know of, but never really believed until now.  Scenes without him - you miss him.  Ledger steals the show, I won't put details for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but he sells the character so much.
He started the make up design itself, but they added scar tissue around the ends of his mouth to sell the character from knife scars to the sides of his mouth from an abusive father, self-mutilation - you never know, its just this mysterious character that he continuously believe.  It's Ledger's crazy laugh, its his affliction for anarchy, its the way he talks, the way he clicks his mouth.  Its honestly a travesty he doesn't have an encore.  He had started filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Terry Gilliam movie (Monty Python).

While the TwoFace story was good, Aaron Eckhart (Thank-you for Smoking) sells the role of Harvey Dent well, a likeable public figure locking up the mob, the 2-Face thing, meh.  And his face looked awesome, no cheap purple make-up, and a half leopard print suit, burns, flesh, and bone!!  Maybe it was just the fact that Ledger put everyone else to shame, even in gruesome scenes where he cuts peoples mouths out the side of the mouth, you cringe, and they never ever show it.  I thought the film was over about 3 times, and found it hard to say goodbye to the Joker - glad to see more.

FIN:I can't help but write about the movie, I have never done anything like this before, especially on the gong.  I can't help but re-live scenes and talk about it.  Jaron and I could literally sit in the theatre, 1am at thispoint, and literally watch it again, I'm sure Jay would have to, as he missed 60% of it passed out in the corner.

GO SEE IT!!!! and discuss.

Open Chat / Steve's Night
« on: November 17, 2007, 10:45:03 PM »
Steve's Night
Steve's Night is brought to you by Polar Ice Vodka, Glacially Distilled for that smooth esophagal vomit later on.

I wanted to thank you all for coming, seeing the place, hanging out, playing poker, I'll have to join you next time...

Shad and I hit up the liquor store beforehand and I'm thinking, "Vodka yeah, I've been drinking beer and having a desk job, getting a little chunky, Vodka would be awesome."  Grabbed a couple of huge Heinekens as "give up beer completely - yeah right."  Head back to the place starving, so we grabbed some Vermicelli and started watching TV and had my beer.  People start showing up, I grab the vodka - make myself a little Rockstar & Vodka concoction - barely tasting the alcohol, throw like another shot and a half in there.

Practice games over, everyone is there, poker starts, finish drink one, on to drink 2.  I made it to like exactly after bilinds increased, and I bolted for the toilet.  Vermicelli sprayed everywhere, thinking and typing this while still not feeling well at all is triggering the gag reflex in the back of my throat right now.  So immediately after puking, to the best of my recollection, I go RIGHT TO BED.  its like 10:30 - I Think!!

I woke up feeling like the vein in my head pulse and move the pillow lying on my face - the vein is moving the pillow.  Under a pillow, my audio perceptive skills seem to have been heightened, I can hear the blood moving through my head.  I am fully clothed, I am lying sideways along my perfectly made bed, with me on top of it, no blankets on, no sheets.  I get up - see the disaster in the livingroom, start smelling booze drowning out the oxygen emitting from my bamboo plant, and masking the fresh scent of my cinnamon mocha air freshener.

I grab some water, lie down, sleep for 3.25 minutes before bolting for the washroom again.  I'm tasting orange juice, shredded beef, I cannot tell you the last time I had orange juice.  I have sprayed the back corner behind the toilet, against the tub and wall with a concoction of vodka, vermicelli, orange juice and heineken.  I'm up, I'm in the living room going over a mesage that Cole had left on my phone at 7:01am.  "Tell your brother - he can kiss my white ass, this isn't directed to you, but he can kiss my white ass.  Tell him I'm on my way to work, and it SUCKS, I'm almost there.  You don't have to tell him.....This SUCKS..........................(pause) Mehhhh - Such is Life!  Hope I didn't wake you."

I watched some crazy talking dinosaur show where like 25 herbivores were chasing after a T-Rex, and thought to myself, this is a gangfight Michael would be proud of.
I decided, meh, I should be fine, I'll drive Jason home, he's like, "We can get some Cora's."  And I was in like Flynn - as Cole would say - and Cole I did hear another guy say this - we gave you a hard time saying you made it up, but thereyago.

I'm driving, feeling I can do this, made it to 130th to turn across the bridge to get into South Trail.  And there is like 40 cars waiting for this light, it was ridiculous.  We're not moving, I start scrambling around the car, I look over at Jason, "I'm gonna puke."  He's like "What?", I am scrambling, I'm inching up towards the light - STOP - I grab a half-full tupperware container with Craisins in it.  Jason is like "are Craisins gonna prevent puking" - I didn't explain - I opened the lid and hurled inside of it, 2 vomits, 1 dry heave, and I'm driving as the light turns green, I'm wiping my chin.  We pull in - Jason orders a smoothie, apple juice, coffee and water.  I get a smoothie and alot of fruit - I am eying up the washroom entrance the entire meal.  I'm feeling woozy again and must lie down.

We'll see you at the game tonight........stomach willing.

-Steve

« on: October 06, 2006, 06:46:36 AM »
There are occasionally shows running through this prairie deserted city of ours.  here's where to post 'em.

To start off, Reel Big Fish will be running through, and their live show is beyond belief, I've got this crazy video of the band playing, the trumpet player is wearing a bumblebee suit and the trombonist (sp?), is playing a plunger.  Let me know if this is appealing to anyone.  It'll be a great skankin' good time with Streetlight Manifesto opening (ex-members of Catch22).

Also, Jurassic 5, 1.2. Jurassic Crew on November 1st, one of the same nights that the Tragically Hip are playing at Mac Hall.  On that note, the Hip will be here for 4 shows.

Thoughts?

Lemme know what you think, or call 667-6698.
