Well with under three weeks to go I thought we could come on here and officially declare how cool we are that we are excited for a video game to come out.

Also, here is a video of the developers showing create a class that gives great details about what will be in the multiplayer:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sL-FqafbzU

Just thought I'd start a new topic instead of using the Playoff pool topic as that might be confusing.  I will still let Steve have the credit though.  Here is his post:

We're in the 7 player game again.

Jokes / Sean Avery
« on: December 08, 2008, 07:24:20 PM »
James Duthie on TSN has an amusing article about Sean Avery.

The link is http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/james_duthie/?id=258902 but I will reproduce it below if some of you are lazy (or if the link becomes inactive for whatever reason).

I lol'd.

And now the next episode in the bizarro reality show that is Sean Avery:  Image Rehabilitation. (Also known as Career Salvation.)

What other choice is there?  The Stars don't want him back.  No one will trade for him (except Tampa maybe, they take everybody!)  Even the minor league teams Dallas would love to send him to are turning their backs (How far have you fallen when the Manitoba Moose want no part of you?)

So the only option left is self re-invention.

The anger-management counseling is a start.  Though if Avery were a rock or movie star (which he apparently believes he is), his next move would be to check into some faux-rehab clinic (Foot-In-Mouth Addiction?), then do Oprah, People Magazine, and pronounce himself a changed man.

Sadly, Oprah has never heard of hockey, and People has Britney booked for the next six covers.  So with nowhere else to turn, a desperate Avery calls the one guy who might be able to help him out:

Somewhere in Russia, a cell phone rings.

 Ray Emery:   "Ugghh…Uh…What the…Where am I…Uhh…Hel…lo?"

Avery:  "Oh Geez, sounds like I woke you up.  Sorry man. Is it the middle of the night in Russia?"

Ray (rolls over and looks at clock):  "Nah, its noon.  Oh crap, did I miss practice?!?  Wait…oh ya…day off…Phewww.  Hey, who is this anyway?"

Avery:  "It's Sean."

Emery:  "Shean Donovan!  Great to hear from a Sen!  I knew one of you would call me eventually!  It only took…seven months.  Wassup!?!  You guys miss me don'tcha?  I bet Alex Auld's suits are weak, right?  No way could that dude pull off a top hat!

Avery:  "No…no.  It's Sean AVERY!  But you're right about the suits.  I interned at Vogue, Ray.  They even talk about you duds there."

Emery:  "Oh, that Sean Avery!  Good to hear from you.  How are your Rangers doing?"

Avery:  "Uhh…Yeah…I actually signed with Dallas last summer."

Emery:  "Oh…Sorry.  I don't get much NHL news over here.  How's Melrose doin' in Tampa, by the way?  He's one cool cat.  He'll do really well there.  Anyways, Dallas, eh?  Good for you!  It must be nice to get out of that media spotlight in NYC.  You know, somewhere you can keep a nice low profile, stay out of trouble."

Avery:  "Uhh, yeah, well about that…"

Emery:  "Oh-oh.  What happened?  You wave your stick in front of a goalie again to screen him?  I thought that was hilarious, dude!  Though just to be clear, I would have speared you in the groin."

Avery:  "Nah, it wasn't that.  I just made a little joke…tried to get under Phaneuf's skin…it didn't quite get the reaction I was hoping for."

Emery:  "That's all?"

Avery:  "Basically.  Oh, there were a couple of other little things.  I ripped the NHL and most of its stars.  I didn't really talk to anyone all year in the dressing room.  I didn't listen to my coaches.  And I pretty much turned into the worst free agent signing in history.  But that's about it.  And now get this!  For some bizarre reason, my teammates don't want me back! And nobody in the league will trade for me, either."

Emery:  "Been there."

Avery:  "Yeah, that's why I called.  What did you learn from your…umm…problems in Ottawa?"

Emery:  "Well, let's see.  I learned that I need an alarm clock with an amplifier.  And I learned that there are some bad freakin' drivers in that city, dude!  How hard is it to pull over when a Hummer's coming up your freakin'…"

Avery (interrupting):  "No, no…I mean what did you learn about yourself?  Because I hear you're playing great in Russia and behaving well, and that you'll probably be back in the NHL soon."

Emery:  "Oh.  Wow.  Tough one.  I really just came here for the hot Russian swimsuit models and the fur coats.  They have some sick furs here, bro!"

Avery:  "Really? I'm in! You should see the shades I wore at my hearing with Bettman!  P-I-M-P baby!

Emery:  "Sweet!   Well, maybe you should come here.  Trust me, one trouble-free season in Russia, and no one will remember any of the bad stuff you did before."

Avery (excited):  "Really, no one?

Emery:  "Okay, Phaneuf might."

Open Chat / Hockey Pool 2008
« on: September 09, 2008, 02:02:50 AM »
Okay folks, time to do it again.

You know the deal and if not you can ask me or anyone else who played last time.  Essentially you go to the website (www.sportingnews.com), create an account for free if you don't already have one.  Then you go to fantasy hockey, Salary Cap Hockey Challenge:  Season 1.  Create a team name (can be the same as your account name), then join an existing league.  The league information is as follows:

League Name:  The Gong Show
Password:  gong

$30 million, 7 players, 2 trades a week, 1 survivor.

And go.

Open Chat / March Madness Bracket
« on: March 08, 2008, 04:59:51 PM »
Alright, seeing how everyone is enjoying the Hockey Pool I thought we might like to try a March Madness bracket as well.  As some of you may know March Madness is college basketball, which may sound boring but I find doing the bracket can make it entertaining.  It starts in two weeks and the major portion of it happens over a Thursday-Sunday.  There are 64 teams that get wittled to I think 16 that weekend which makes for a lot of games and some can actually be pretty exciting if you combine some beers.

I have created a group on CBS Sportsline.  I think that it can be accessed here:

http://thegongshow.mayhem.sportsline.com/

First time users will have to sign in.  It should be self explanatory but if you need any help let me know.  Once registered I am hoping that you go to our group's page and are asked for a password.  In any case the info is:

Group Name:  The Gong Show
Password:  gong

If you guys can let me know how it all works out that would be great.  Once you are signed up I think using the link I put above should take you straight to the group page.  The picks aren't open until next Sunday.  But at that time just put in who you think will win right to the end and wait for the games to begin.  I think each round has different point weights and I believe the seed is weighted in there too.  Suffice it to say if you get your picks right you will get points.

I know that most of you have no idea who is good and bad with college basketball, but neither do I and that is the best part.  It means we all have a chance.  All the teams are ranked by seed (1-16 in each of the four "divisions").  Therefore it is pretty easy to see who is "better" going in.  No research required (though I suppose it couldn't hurt).  Just pick and pray that your random picks are better than the next guys random picks.

Hope you all join.  Let me know if there are any problems etc.

At the risk of sparking an intellectual conversation (don't worry I fully expect it to degrade the other way).  Did everyone see this?

Just think about the Bosco/Wilma rivalries.  Times about 100.  Does anyone else think this is a terrible damn idea?

Okay Bob and I were talking about it at wings the other night and I promised to put a link here for the boat we are thinking about.  A bit more cost but once you see it I don't think you can go back.

Events / Bob's B'day
« on: September 29, 2007, 04:03:55 PM »
For all those "losers" not on facebook.  You may well know that it is Bob's Birthday tomorrow Sept 30.  Seeing how irresponsible it would bew to get drunk on a Sunday we will instead be getting drunk on a Saturday.  Come on down to the George this evening and then if all goes well out to an even less reputable establishment.  See everyone tonight.  Or else.  So help me.

Open Chat / Barry Bonds 756 Ball
« on: September 20, 2007, 01:22:03 AM »
So apparently this fashion designer Marc Ecko bought Barry Bond's record breaking homerun ball for some crazy amount (I think 3/4 of a Million) and has decided to be democratic and allow the people to decide it's fate.

On his website people have until September 25th to vote and your three choices are:

1) Give it to the Hall of Fame
2) Burn an asterisk into it with a branding iron and then give it to the Hall of Fame.
3) Somehow put it on a rocket ship and get them to ditch it into space.

Not sure how that last one would work out, but anyway go vote and have your say.

Open Chat / Fantasy Hockey 07/08
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:17:21 PM »
Okay everyone I set up a league for us today.  Hopefully you all know the drill.  Go sign up and pick a seven man team using a salary cap of $30 mil.  This time I suggest that we all pitch in $10 to make it more interesting.  We can do winner take all or maybe winner take most and second gets his money back or something.  Depends how much interest we have and how many of you bastards actually pay.  A small sum of money makes things that much more interesting.

The website splits the season into two separate seasons and then playoffs.  So I was thinking we could do Season 1 and Season 2, which encompasses the regular season as one whole deal.  They don't keep the points but we can just record the points at the end of Season 1 and add them to the Season 2 totals to get a grand total.  Or if everyone prefers we can just have two separate rounds.  We also need to consider the playoff round.  That can be separate too or we can have three rounds for the grand prize, we would just record the regular season totals and add them on.

Anyway, without further ado:

Go to http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/ and scroll down to Fantasy Hockey Challenge Season 1.  Register a free account if you haven't already done so.  Enter your team name and then join the league.

League:  The Gong Show
Pass:  gong

Then give me $10 and wait until September 29th to let the fun begin.  Simple.

By the way this is a basic league as opposed to a pro league.  The main difference is in a basic league there is no ability to buy extra trades so you are stuck with only 2 free ones a week.  It just makes things simplier and that way we can all avoid temptation.

And finally, at the risk of going on too long.  Can everyone post here what their preference is for season length.  Just let me know if you want Season 1, Season 2, and Play-offs to be three separate competitions or any other combination of the above.  If we do all three together we could bump it up from $10 but let me know about that as well.  I'm fine with doing all three in one big competition and leaving it at $10.  Lots of value for the money.  So let me know.

Let the games begin.

Open Chat / Iggy or Kipper?
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:36:34 PM »
Well we all know that both of their contracts expire after next season.  What do you think the Flames should do between now and then?  It seems to me that they can only realistically keep one of them.  In fact it almost makes sense to sign one and trade the other as early as this summer while their stock is high.  I'll leave my opinion aside for the moment to see what everyone thinks first.  Let us all know your thoughts.

Open Chat / Are You Smarter Than a Monkey?
« on: April 12, 2007, 05:12:32 PM »
As many of you may know, for the past three or so years TSN SportsCentre brings in a monkey named Maggie at playoff time to predict the matchups in each round (by spinning a wheel of course, she isn't a talking monkey after all).  TSN.ca tells me that she went 9-6 last year and now I want to see if I, or we, can do any better.

As such, I will post Maggie's First Round predictions as well as my own and when the Second Rounds starts it will be updated, and so on.  Everyone else is welcome to place their predictions as well and if anyone does I will tally everyone at the end of each round to see how we are stacking up each round against each other, and against the monkey.  I recognize that last night there were already four games but I assure you that I will still post my original predictions without being influenced by last nights games (which should be evident by my picks, three of which are down one game already).

If anyone else puts in predictions I would urge you to do so sometime today before the games and to try not to be influenced by last nights games if at all possible.  Remember, if you have to cheat to beat the monkey it is arguable that the monkey still wins.

So without further ado, here are Maggie's picks followed by my own.  And yes I realize that the formatting sort of blows, but this friggin board doesn't like all those spaces apparently and the indent is a pain in the ass to use.

Open Chat / Meatballs
« on: March 26, 2007, 06:28:33 PM »
I was just eating some meatballs and I felt it was necessary to devote an entire topic plus a poll to their greatness.  Could they be any more awesome and manly?  I mean they are meat.  And they are in ball form.  It's like they managed to pack a hearty amount of awesome deliciousness into a compact sphere.  That is so efficient, and efficiency is inherently manly.

Feel free to use this space to talk about how cool meatballs are, or perhaps add your own thoughts or experiences with meatballs.

(In the interests of unity, any vegetarians in our midst are permitted to talk about the close cousin of the meatball, the tofu ball...if such a thing even exists)
