Bugatti Veyron, The fastest production car in the world.  Just to explain how fast this car is...

If you held a Veyron vs. Mclaren F1 race you could let the Mclaren F1 start first and get up to 120mph before starting in the Veyron… the Veyron would still beat the Mclaren to 200mph.

Keep in mind that until now the Mclaren F1 was the fastest in the world.  The Veyron's top speed is 407 km/h.  0-60 in 2.5 second.  It has a 8 Litre, W16, 1001 hp engine. The car sells for $1.5 million... it costs Bugatti $5 million to build each car.  They lose $3.5 million for every one they make.  (Goodthing VW pays the bills)

Check out this vid to see how crazy fast this thing is:   http://www.drivenblog.com/movies/bug.avi

BMW M3 CSL, probably my all time favorite car.

No radio, no air conditioning, special lightweight glass, lightweight carpeting, carbon fiber racing seats, carbon fiber roof, composite trunk, lightweight magnesium wheels, 27 more hp than a regular M3, lower stiffer suspension, formula one transmission.

This all equals one bad ass, no compromises sports car for the purist!

The W16 alloy engine developed by Bugatti for the Veyron 16.4 will
have a special and absolutely unique place in the history of sports
car construction. Its design employs the space-saving VR principle
with two particularly slender eight-cylinder blocks arranged at a 90°
angle to each other.

1001 horsepower equip the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 with a level of
acceleration unheard of in the sports car segment, propelling it from
0 to 60 mph in just three
seconds and past the 200 mph mark in a mere 14 seconds. Thanks to its
923 lb-ft, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4’s enormous propulsive power is not
exhausted until it reaches
252.3 mph (406 km/h): the maximum speed for which chassis and drive
train have been designed. Any further performance escalation is
limited by current design and construction.

Also unique is the power transmission via an innovative directshift
gearbox. Without any interruption in the power flow, the sequential
seven-speed gearbox transmits the engine’s power to the wheels via
permanent four-wheel drive. Put simply, this means uninterrupted
acceleration from a standing start to maximum speed: a feeling
previously known only to jet pilots.

It is also the most expensive car ever built. Before that was the Maclaren F1, wich had a 24 carrot
gold firewall.  If anyone is really interested then check out the
Nismo Z-Tune Skyline. When tested it is predicted to be the fastest
production car ever tested.  Beating all current records by more then
.6 of a second.

2006 is the first year for the production Veron, the 2003 Veyron on that list would have been the concept.  The car had HUGE problems and demanded alot of revision, that's why it took so damm long to get to market.

To be fair though, I have seen times for the production Veyron range from 2.5 to 2.7 seconds.  But definitely no slower than that.

Another thing to note: Yes, those cars are extremely quick as well but most of the top ones are not production cars, they are tuner cars, race cars, or concept cars... likely running racing slicks in a few cases.  The Veyron is street legal, in series production, and you can actually buy it (if you had $1.5 million).

Now this is really something! Top Fuel Dragster.
0-60 in 0.6 seconds
0-200 in 2.4 seconds
So that means it'll get to 200 before any of the cars above will even get to 60.  Now that is amazing!

On another note. This instance of "Fastest Car" is actually dealing with the top speed of the vehicle.

This car has the highest top speed of any production car ever made.

yes i agree , fastes car could mean 0-60 , 0-100, 0- 160 , 0-200, top speed, first to break down, 1/8 m, 1/4 m. Then of course the fules , Alcohol? gas? nitrous? .......... its hard to say thats the fastest car in the world when many others can beat it in a variety of categories.

Some other facts ( who knows how many are ture )

One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower than the first 8 rows at Daytona.

Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume.

The supercharger takes more power to drive then a stock hemi makes.

Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.

Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame
front of nitro methane measures 7050 degrees F.

Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting of it's fuel flow.

If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half.

Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons.

To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's.

If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.

Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence.
