I think it is a good idea to get some more people on board.

But I also worry that it would not serve to add more posts...just people registering with the intent to continue lurking.

Most of the hits are from people who view without contributing obviously.  Having to register might scare off some of these people.  Though I question how important a factor this is as they are not adding anything to the board in the first place (content-wise).  However, they could recommend it to friends who might then register.  There is also the question of search engine bots as Bob has pointed out to me.

I think this is something that we all need to discuss and consider before the decision is made.  The overall question is whether the registration will encourage new users to post.  As we have seen we have about 100 users, many of whom do not post...so I don't know what the true answer to the problem is.

Some more opinions would be helpful as always.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some death to defy.

My decision of a vote of yes was mostly derived through Andrew's trains of thought. Since half of the registered members do not post, anyways, nor do the guests, what harm can be done by making it a requirement to register?

Even if they must register to view the topics, the hits will keep coming, will they not? To my knowledge, the hits received do not come from reading the posts, but simply connecting to the site itself. I may be wrong in this, but if that's the case, what could go wrong with mandatory registration?

More members, more referrals, and more preceding members. In any sense, with mandatory registration, the site can only become increasingly popular. We won't be losing any of the 100+ members currently registered just because other must register.

I guess the line of thinking regarding the hits was incorrect on my part.  But the more I think about it, the hits are mostly irrelevant from the standpoint of the board's content.

Perhaps if people are forced to register to view things they will also be encouraged to post.  After all if you have already put the effort to register you might as well post too.

Maybe what we need is people of this forum to take a Forum 101 class.  I don't think most people have even been able to find this post so far, let alone respond to it.  Maybe I should put the view new posts and view todays  posts links in the title so people can use them more often.  :duh:

Ah, but if they have to register, they might contribute, and do we want any more freaks talking about a Willy Nelson song "my patriotic country" again?????  Wait, it was fun when we banned him.

I think the idea is we want them to contribute then we just filter out the freak shows.  I am working on a brief "How to" on using the forum. When I finish that up I'll probably make it registered users only.  Unless someone comes up with a good counter arguement.

Freaks or not...it would be entertaining.  Besides I feel that it is the dissension created by people that don't get along that makes a message board fun.  Maybe I missed the point but... :poke:

Point well taken...besides we should not stray off topic.  The fate of the board is at hand!  I'm assuming other people have opinions of course...yet another dangerous game.

Heh, seems as though even the majority of registered members do not have any inclination to post their concerns and/or opinions in this matter, let alone an irrelevant illsighted remark. I vote we fire them all. Then take over the world.

But again, I'm in favour for mandatory registration.

Hah, we could even make old members register by asking a skill testing question about posts on the site.  Separate the boys from the men so to speak (no disrespect meant Jami...for once).

Skill testing question, eh? Could be tough, there goes the members, you're all from Calgary! Booya!  :hump:

Naw, heh, but yea, I second Andrew's idea.
